On this page you can watch/listen to oral language samples in Finnish. You can find an assessment scale for oral language skills here.
Later on, a formal assessment and verbal justification will be provided for each speaker. The page can then be navigated by skill level (buttons above). You will also find the speakers’ self-assessments and reflections on the task.
The task is given to most speakers at the time of the recording, so the language you hear in the recording is spontaneous and unprepared. This may mean that you hear the speaker using filler words and thinking about vocabulary. The quality of the speech does not have to or should not match the quality of written text. Oral language skills are above all interactive and often take place in everyday situations, without preparation. Speakers may use a dictionary to look up individual words if they feel the need to do so.
Speaker 1. “My language history”
Self assessment: A2.2-B1.1. “Grammar works but improvising and speaking freely is difficult. Listening is easier, but producing language is hard.”

Speaker 2. Studies, language, and culture

Speaker 3. Mindmap on sustainable transportation
Self assessment: B1.1. “Not knowing the topic vocabulary in Finnish made the task difficult, as my Finnish is more everyday Finnish, such as using it at shops etc. Sometimes I need to rehearse for different situations or ask for support. Making a mind map helped, without it it would have been difficult to talk about the topic. More time would help, but too much would encourage over-thinking it.”
